Joining our CSA does not mean you have to run out and buy a bunch of new gadgets to stock your kitchen. You probably already have a sharp knife, vegetable peeler, and cutting board; and really that’ll get you through the season. If you are looking to expand your kitchen or upgrade some items we’ve tested out some great tools and gadgets. This summer we added a food processor to the farm kitchen and it has become on of our most valuable tools. I’ve used a variety of food processors from the mini food chopper to high end processors and the KitchenAid 7-Cup Food Processor with ExactSlice System is my favorite. I don’t like having an extra gadget for every kitchen task (I can’t stand garlic mincing/peeling tools), so I love that this food processor can purée, shred, and slice. For a large food processor this model is fairly inexpensive. If you don’t mind spending a bit more you can try the 9-cup or 13-cup model. The 7-cup processor works great for most of our needs. One of the best features of this model is the adjustable slicing blade. I’ve used it to cut paper thin slices of beet and thicker slabs of root vegetables.

Product Review: The Best Food Processor

In my home kitchen I had an earlier version of this food processor that was a bit difficult to clean. I’m happy to report that this version is very easy to clean and has a 2 in 1 wide feed tube. What does this mean? The feed tube has a smaller insert tube you can use if you’re slicing something mall and thin like a cucumber. We use the shredding disk for grating hard root vegetables and squash into fritters and latkes, slaws, and salads. You can slice or grate a cabbage into slaw in no time. The regular mixing blade will purêe smooth pestos and sauces or pulse tart and pie crusts.
