April is a very busy month on our farm, we started out the month doing some initial tillage in our fields and setting up high tunnels. In May well plant our high tunnels with heirloom tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and eggplants — but first we have to sure up the greenhouse plastic and till the soil, we have over a half acre of high tunnels so this is a big job in the early spring.
Every time the weather breaks we take the opportunity to plant our veggies. Our last frost date isn’t until the end of May but there’s a surprising amount of seeds that can go into the ground before that. Spinach, Carrots, Beets, Parsnips, Chard, Radishes, Spring Turnips, Arugula, and Mustards are all in the ground now or will be by the end of the month.
We also grow a lot of plants out from transplants. This is the time to put in Broccoli, Cabbage, Boc Choi, Lettuce, Kohlrabi, Fennel, Parsley, Kale, Collard Greens, Escarole, and Napa Cabbage.
It’s also time to plant next years Strawberries – This year’s crop looks very good by the way!
On rainier days there’s plenty to do in our greenhouse. This winter we added on to our existing seedling house but we’ve filled up the new space without a problem – we transplanted all of our peppers and eggplants into bigger pots, and of course we seeded by hand hundreds of flats of transplants.
Our first CSA distribution isn’t until the second week of June but we have some storage veggies all ready for the boxes. For our first few weeks, we’ll have in addition to some of the crops I already mentioned: Carrots, Sunchokes, Beets, and some pretty pink turnips.
