We are slowly inching toward the heavy summer crops. This week we weeded all of the peppers and eggplants in the fields and they look awesome! Usually, we dont pick many peppers out of the field until the beginning of August, but the crop looks about a week or two ahead of schedule. I guess peppers and eggplants like hot muggy weather!
We’ve also been keeping a close eye on the Cucumbers, Summer Squash, and Zucchini in the fields. There are some little fruits on them – maybe harvest by the end of next week? We’ll be pulling Fresh Onions for the CSA shares next week. For the next couple of weeks you’ll see smaller onions in bunches with the greens still on them, after a few weeks we’ll get bigger onions fully cured (no greens). The Tomatoes in the high tunnels look really Awesome! We should have ripe tomatoes in less than a month. We had parsley in the farm shares last week – soon we’ll have Dill, Cilantro, and Basil in the herb rotation as well. Carrots from the field are still a few weeks off – we like to let them size up fully before harvest. Fresh Beets with Greens are pretty likely next week. Do you know how to cook with bulb Fennel? Once you start you’ll wish you’d always known about it (unless you did always know about it). We should have Fennel next week as well. Plus we have some very sweet fresh eating Cabbages coming up next week for you! Also, we have a late planting of Japanese Radishes – we thought the planing wasn’t even going to make it because of the heat so we’d written it off. But we just checked it and huh, there’s some Radishes there! So you may see those in the share this week.
Ok, Here’s the Forecast in List form:
Sweet fresh eating Cabbage
Bunched Beets with Greens
Kale or Collard Greens
Fresh Onions with Greens
Summer Squash and Zucchini
Eggplants from the high tunnels
Almost Done (but will be back in the Fall)
