Oops – we accidentally sent a link to this week this post is from a different season – Click Here For this weeks Harvest Forecast!
This week’s rain has really made our crops jump! Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Collard Greens, and Kohlrabi are all coming up next week. The downside of the ran however, is that the Strawberry crop – which is on the verge of ripening – really does not like wet soggy weather. The two most difficult things about growing organic strawberries are keeping the weeds down, and avoiding moldy berries when they ripen. We have the weeds under control thanks to hours of weeding last year – but since we do not use fungicides the moldy soft berries can be a real problem in a wet year. So let’s all keep our fingers crossed for mostly dry sunny days next week – if all goes well we may see Strawberries in the CSA boxes this week. This week should also bring Hakurei Turnips, more Radishes from our fields, and Carrots and Beets from cold storage.
For the first few weeks our boxes are pretty heavy on the greens, but in a few weeks we should have Broccoli, Cabbages, and Beets fresh from the field. Stretching out 3 -4 weeks, we’ll start seeing Summer Squash, Cucumbers, and maybe some early Peppers.
A few people have been asking about our Online Farm Store and when we’ll have that set up for bulk purchases. The plan is to have the farm store ready by the first week of July, however there’s a chance we may be ready to get it going before that as well. Once it is up, you’ll be able to purchase bulk produce items and have them delivered to your pick-up location. Another feature we’ll be adding via the web farm store is a “Trial CSA Share” so that people can try out a share for just one week.
