Heavy CSA Bounty Lifters

This week we planted our last plantings of Lettuce and Spinach for the season – and now begins the Heavy Harvest.  Most of the weeds that need pulled have been pulled, and a great deal of the fall clean-up is done.  So for the next 9 weeks we’ll have about 12 people hauling in the bounty 50 hours a week!

Last week we harvested some of our winter squash crop and Delicata Squash was in the boxes throughout the week.  That should continue this week as well.  The Broccoli is coming on strong and we have a nice planting of Bok Choi to get through as well.  It’s been a little on the wet side at the farm but we did manage to dig some potatoes – so we’ll put those in this week.  Also, we’re going to try and start sending some Leeks as long as it’s not too muddy to get them out of the field – so Potato Leek Soup in your futures.

The only bad news – is the Tomato crop is really falling apart quickly!  All the moisture and temperature fluctuations have hit the crop hard (all the tomato diseases love this weather)  There’s a chance we may have a few more tomatoes, but then again, chances are probably better that they’re done for!

There is also a whole slew of “greens of peripheral importance” coming on right now – Mustards, Mizuna, Arugula, Napa Cabbage, Bok Choi… some items from that lot  should end up in the boxes. Also we discussed at our morning meeting (every morning at 5:45 am) – putting Carrots in the boxes instead of Beets this week – so that’s likely to occur!
