Endless Kale for our CSA!

September is here – the kids are back to school, the nights are cooling down – all the signs of the beginning of Autumn!  Which means – Winter Squash, tons of ripe red and yellow peppers, Kale, Broccoli, Fall Cabbages, Leeks,  and more… in short the most bounteous harvests of the year!

Kale is back – and in a big way! The fall crop looks fantastic and we should have it pretty much every week for the rest of the season (unless we can’t cram it in the boxes because they’re too stuffed with other beautiful produce.)  We started digging our Fall Carrots – but we quickly backed off as the carrots were smaller than we’d like.  We may have a few weeks without Carrots here and there in the fall, but most weeks we will have them.  This week we’re going to try our darndest to get some more of those potatoes out of the ground.  We’re a little disappointed with both the crop quality and yield on the Potatoes. Nothing too alarming, just the skins are not as perfect looking as we’d like, and the tubers are small!

Our Tomatoes are winding down – they’ll still be in the shares intermittently throughout September – it looks like for a while we’ll be able to put them in the boxes every other week.  We’re offering a limited amount of the Italian Heirlooms in the farm store this week – but it looks like the last week for that offering.

There’s a whole bunch of Broccoli in the fields and we’ve been picking it as it comes ready, it looks beautiful now – but broccoli is a difficult crop – if the weather is too wet the heads can get funky on us.  We’ll probably start picking the Winter Squash this week – we’ll start with the Delicata Squash, it has a great flavor and is the first ripen – here’s a post we put up last year about Delicata.  Oh and I almost forgot! there’s a whole bunch of Radishes that have to get picked this week or they’ll go past their prime – so those will almost certainly make it into the boxes.
