Labor Day Weekend is upon us, along with the unofficial transition into Autumn. Our CSA veggies are showing the signs of this as well. The bounty of an Autumn harvest is just about to be upon us. This week we picked the last of the Summer Squash and Cucumbers and we gave out the last of our spring planted Cabbages in the CSA boxes. But in the next weeks we’ll be getting quite a few new items (or ones we haven’t seen for awhile) in our CSA boxes.
In the coming few weeks we’ll see, Arugula, Broccoli, Winter Squash, Arugula, Radishes, Kale, Salad Turnips, Celery, Kohlrabi, and Spinach. But, here’s the thing about these crop transitions – they can be very difficult to predict timing wise, especially in the fall when temperature and ground moisture can vary so much. So most of these crops are ending up on the “Maybe” list this week.
We should continue to have Peppers, Tomatoes, Eggplants, Onions, Lettuce, and Potatoes. Carrots should also be back next week. We have plenty of Beets and we’ll be rotating them in and out of the share boxes for the rest of the CSA season.
On the Bulk Farm Store front – we’ve been working on getting some Organic Fruit up on the store (certified organic or no chemicals) It may not happen this week but we have been talking to some local farmers about bulk Apples and Asian Pears. We’ll likely sell these by the bushel or half bushel. We will continue to offer the Italian Heirloom Tomatoes and the Heirloom Tomato Mix, however the Beefsteaks are off the list. We will also offer Red Russian Kale, Onions, and Lettuce on the list.
