Heirloom Tomatoes!

Mid Season is upon us! Hard to believe we’re only half-way through the CSA season, there’s so much bounty ahead of us!

This week we’ll start to see ripe bell peppers in the CSA share.  Did you know that a green pepper will turn red and sweeten if left on the plant to ripen? All of the sweet red, yellow, orange, and brown peppers we have started off various shades of green and are now starting to show their colors.  We have more cabbages to pull from the fields, probably several weeks worth.

Usually, we say that Kale “takes a vacation” for the month of August, but this year out kale plantings seem to be liking the cooler August nights and plenty of rainfall.  It looks like we may even have some in the share again this week. Other possible greens this week include Italian Dandelion, Chard and Collard Greens.

Our huge hauls of cucumbers are subsiding somewhat, but there’s still another planting just coming on now.   At some point in the next few weeks the summer squash and zucchini will subside, but by then Winter Squash will be just around the corner.  For Roots we’ll still have Carrots, we may slip Beets back in. and it’s possible we might give digging the potatoes another shot. (we tried a couple weeks ago – but they were pretty small)

The Farm Store orders went really well this week and we’ll be doing this again.  There were a few minor kinks, everyone getting used to the system, but it looks like we’ll continue to offer this option for folks who want to buy bulk from us.
